All-new MINI breaks cover

The highly anticipated new generation of the MINI has been unveiled today at home in Oxford, UK. Looking fresh yet familiar, the new MINI will be available upon launch with a choice of three engines. The entry-level Cooper will be motivated by a newly developed 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder engine rated at 134 bhp and 162 lb-ft. It is followed by the Cooper D model which gets a 1.5-liter diesel rated at 114 bhp and has a maximum torque of 199 lb-ft. There’s also the Cooper S which makes use of a more powerful 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbo generating 189 bhp and 206 lb-ft.

As far as physical dimensions are concerned, the 2014 MINI is 3821mm long, 1727mm wide and 1414mm tall, making it 98mm longer, 44mm wider and 7mm taller than the previous generation. In addition, the wheelbase has been stretched by 42mm to 2495mm, while the front and rear tracks are now 42 mm, respectively 34 mm bigger. MINI says the cargo capacity of the new model has been boosted by 30 percent to 211 liters.


Those three engines are linked as standard to a six-speed manual transmission or for more money to an optional six-speed auto. MINI is also offering a sportier variant of the automatic that has shorter shift changes and is equipped with paddle shifters.
