Honda Civic Tourer takes down Guinness fuel efficiency world record

The Honda Civic Tourer has claimed a new Guinness world record for fuel efficiency. Equipped with the frugal four-cylinder 1.6-liter i-DTEC turbodiesel engine, the compact wagon embarked on an extensive 13,498 km (8,387 miles) trip across all 24 EU contiguous countries and managed to average a fuel consumption of just 2.82 liters / 100 km (83.4 mpg US / 100.3 mpg UK). The 25-day journey started on June 1st from Aalst, Belgium and ended on June 25th when the car returned to the starting point. A full tank of fuel was enough to cover 1,500 km (932 miles) on average while the whole trip cost €645 (about £459 / $711).

Taking turns behind the wheel of the Honda Civic Tourer were Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren who each drove on average about seven and a half hours per day. Both of them are members of the company’s European R&D division and as you can see, at the end of the trip they were exhausted.

The aforementioned 1.6-liter four-cylinder i-DTEC engine is capable of producing 120 PS (88 kW) and a maximum torque of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) which grants the Civic Tourer with a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) run in 10.1 seconds. It can also be had in the five-door hatchback version whereas the sedan only comes with a 1.8-liter i-VTEC.
