Lexus made a full-size origami IS replica

Lexus has introduced a full-size origami IS replica made by using 1,700 sheets that are fully recyclable. This 1:1 replica uses sheets that are just 10mm thick and all of them were cut using laser technology to ensure perfect precision and to authentically replicate the car’s exterior and interior cabin. In order to get the job done and make sure the assembly sequence is done correctly, Lexus applied a reference number on each sheet and after that the pieces were manually applied by using a water-based / wood glue that required 10 minutes to set after being applied.

The entire project of building the full-size origami IS replica required three months of work and this is actually drivable as the engineers fitted an electric motor on the steel and aluminum frame. As you can see, the interior cabin is very detailed and paints an accurate picture of the real deal which doesn’t really come as a surprise taking into account Lexus offered a digital 3D model of the IS sedan to LaserCut Works and Scales and Models who were responsible for this project that required 1,700 fully recyclable laser-cut cardboard sheets provided by DS Smith.

The full-size origami IS replica will be exhibited starting Thursday at the NEC in Birmingham.
