Ford’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine tuned by Superchips

By implementing a new software in the engine control unit (ECU) of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the UK-based engineers from Superchips have managed to increase the output of the 3-cylinder, 1.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine that powers several Ford models sold in Europe, such as the Focus and the upcoming B-MAX.

The standard version of the engine is capable of developing 123 hp (125 PS) and has a peak torque of 125 lb.-ft. (169 Nm) or 149 lb.-ft. (200 Nm) if the overboost function is turned on.

While testing the engine on the dyno, the people at Superchips have discovered that the engine outputs 127 hp.

After the update of the engine’s ECU, this 1.0-liter EcoBoost unit was dyno-tested again where it unleashed 145 hp (147 PS) at 6,169 rpm, with a peak torque of 167 lb.-ft. (227 Nm) that was reached at 2,656 rpm. Superchips said that despite the increase in output, this hasn’t had a negative effect on the fuel consumption figures of the engine. This means that the power unit is still capable of returning 56 mpg UK (5.0 liters / 100 km or 46.6 mpg US) in the Focus, with the condition that the car is being driven normally.

The process of installing the remapped ECU costs 455 pounds (580 Euros / $713), including VAT. Superchips mentioned that the ECU upgrade is compatible with all the engines that were manufactured starting with 2012. It is important to mention that the software update is applicable only for the 123 hp version of the engine, not for the 100 hp 1.0-liter EcoBoost unit.
