The five finalists for the 2014 Green Car of the Year title have been revealed this week by Green Car Journal and the list is somewhat surprising, but not in a good way.
We assumed the list would include cars such as the Tesla Model S and/or the BMW i3 but these haven’t made the cut as other cars were considered to be “greener” than those two EVs.
What’s perhaps just as shocking is that only one hybrid model has qualified to the final phase of the contest.
The list includes two German diesel-powered sedans in the form of the recently introduced BMW 328d that can do 45 mpg on the highway and the Audi A6 TDI which will do 38 mpg hwy. That hybrid we mentioned is the Honda Accord that returns 47 mpg or 46 mpg in the plug-in hybrid derivative. The two remaining cars are recently introduced models, the Mazda3 (does 41 mpg) and the Toyota Corolla Eco (does 42 mpg).
The winner will be disclosed at next month’s L.A. Auto Show.
