Kia Optima / K5 Hybrid revealed

Kia South Korea has introduced the K5 Hybrid which in international markets will be sold as the Optima Hybrid starting 2016. It looks a lot like the regular model, but comes with slightly different front and rear bumpers, exclusive 16- and 17-inch alloy wheel designs, along with a new front grille featuring an “active air flap” system which will automatically close during high speeds to lower air resistance and enhance efficiency. The interior cabin is virtually the same as in the conventionally-powered model, but the instrument cluster gauges have been adapted specifically for the car’s hybrid powertrain.

Speaking of which, the Kia K5 Hybrid mixes up a GDI 2.0-liter 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The combustion engine develops 156 PS and 189 Nm of torque whereas the electric motor produces an extra 52 PS and 205 Nm, so the hardware arrangement has been pretty much carried over from the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid which is basically the sister model.

Kia will introduce the Optima-badged Hybrid version in Europe sometime next year and they also plan on launching a Optima Wagon on the old continent, but it will likely be sold in United States and in the model’s domestic market as well.
