Mercedes-Maybach S-Class debuts in L.A.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has made its global premiere this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Positioned on top of the range, the new model is 200mm longer than the S-Class LWB and it now measures 5453mm, with all of the added length going into the wheelbase that now measures 3365mm. Compared to the regular S-Class, the Maybach derivative gets slightly different headlights along with a revised front grille while the rear doors have been shortened by 66mm as a method to free up room for the third side window that now sits after the C pillars.

The stretched wheelbase has granted a significantly more spacious cabin for the passengers sitting in the back which benefit from executive rear seats. Mercedes-Benz says the model is actually the quietest car in the world as a result of adding more sound deadening material and installing special seals to optimize the noise insulation.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will be available initially with the S600 powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine outputting 530 HP (390 kW) and 612 lb-ft (830 Nm) of torque. It will be followed by the S500 version with a 4.7-liter V8 bi-turbo generating 455 HP (335 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm). An S400 4MATIC will also arrive with an all-wheel drive system and a 3.0-liter V6 engine rated at 333 HP (245 kW) and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm).

Sales of the model are slated to commence February next year.
