Nissan NV200 taxi for UK revealed

With the NV200 black cab, Nissan wants to put the taxi on UK roads by 2014. This vehicle is based on the NV200 that already has been given the green light to be part of the New York taxi lineup for the future. It’s not that easy to create a London-compatible taxi because it’s more to do than just painting it black and installing a taxi light on its roof.

The cars that work as taxis must meet the legal requirements coming from the Transport for London. The NV200 passes the test regarding headroom with flying colors, along with the one about the 25 ft. turning circle. To meet the latter, Nissan had to add 200mm overall to the vehicle’s front track, along with installing a new suspension.

Another law has to do with the location of the indicators which is limited in relation to the car’s width. Due to the newer wheel arches, these indicators were moved from the light cluster to the front apron. Other legal requirements included installing bright sight patches on the seats, along with a slip-resistant floor. The Nissan NV200 taxi also has a panoramic sunroof, USB ports, while the seats can move back and forth to improve passenger or cargo room.

Under the hood of the taxi is a Juke-sourced 1.5-liter diesel that produces 88 hp or 109 hp, promising to deliver 53.3 mpg UK with CO2 emissions standing at 139 g/km. If the city will make the switch to the NV200 taxi, more than 39,000 metric tons of CO2 / year will be saved, while the drivers will make an annual economy of approximately 700 pounds. The Japanese automaker said that in 2014 they’ll launch an electric version of the NV200.

Up until now there aren’t any official details about the price tag of the vehicle, but most likely it will be priced anywhere between 28,000 and 32,000 pounds, making it cheaper than the current TX4 and Vito taxies, with the NV200 being more affordable to run as well.
