Renault launches the new Clio Cup with a 1.6-liter turbo engine

The French carmaker Renault has unveiled at the beginning of this week the all-new Clio Cup which as you can imagine is based on the fourth generation of the Clio RS that was showcased a few weeks ago during the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

The testing phase began back in early August and up until now they have covered 2,175 miles on a wide array of circuits within France, with Renault reaching the conclusion that the car is a full second quicker per lap in comparison to the outgoing Clio Cup which has a normally-aspirated 2.0-liter turbo.

Speaking of the engine, this new variant adopts a 1.6-liter turbocharged unit tweaked by Oreca Magny-Cours that is capable of producing 220 hp and a maximum torque of 270 Nm, making it 23 hp and 30 Nm more powerful when compared to the road-going version. This engine is connected to a 6-speed sequential gearbox and has an AP Racing clutch plus a limited slip differential.

The new Renault Clio Cup rides on a fresh new set of 17-inch Speedline Corse racing alloy wheels and features a high-performance braking system that consists of 320mm AP Racing front brake discs and four-piston calipers. Other technical features worth mentioning include the ZF-Sachs one-way adjustable dampers with specific aluminum wishbones.

As far as the styling is concerned, the new model has been fitted with a Clio Cup-like roof scoop and a big wing mounted on the roof that offers 88 pounds of downforce at 125 mph. As you would expect, it also has a full roll cage, data acquisition system built into the TFT color display, as well as a pair of bucket seats.
