2016 Ford Explorer bows in Los Angeles
The 2016 Ford Explorer has made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show on the occasion of the model’s 25th anniversary. The facelift brings a subtle evolutionary design change with restyled front & rear bumpers, tweaked headlights and a slightly modified front grille. The back of the car now boasts fresh taillights and a newly developed spoiler optimized to diminish drag. On the inside there are better materials combined with a modified center stack now featuring real buttons rather than the touch-sensitive controls installed in the pre-facelift model.
The 2016 Ford Explorer will be offered with a flagship Platinum variant adding LED headlights, dual-panel moonroof, silver skid plates and two-tone 20-inch rims. The cabin gets brushed aluminum accents, satin ash wood trim, perforated Nirvana leather upholstery and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel that has wood inserts. Other goodies include a brushed aluminum “Ford” emblem installed on the steering wheel, along with a powerful 500-watt Sony sound system, digital instrument cluster and accent stitching.
Gone is the four-cylinder 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine as this has been replaced by a 2015 Mustang-sourced four-cylinder 2.3-liter EcoBoost producing at least 270 bhp (201 kW) and 300 lb-ft (406 Nm).
Sales of the 2016 Ford Explorer are slated to begin in the next summer.
