2016 Mazda MX-5 goes official
This is Mazda’s brand new and highly anticipated MX-5 Miata which has been unveiled as a celebration of the model’s long-lasting 25-year lifespan. It’s scheduled to go on sale next year as a 2016MY and adopts the company’s Kodo design language along with a generous array of SKYACTIV technologies. It rides on a rear-wheel drive architecture and compared to the model it replaces it is 105mm shorter, 10mm wide rand 20mm lower. In addition, it has also managed to shave off an impressive 100 kg (220 lbs) so it should be considerably more nimble.
Mazda will offer the overhauled MX-5 with two direct-injection gasoline engines that have a 1.5- and 2.0-liter displacement. These two motors will be mated to a 6-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual gearbox while the engines are estimated to deliver 140 bhp for the 1.5 and 200 bhp for the 2.0-liter. It should be mentioned the new Miata benefits from a 50:50 weight distribution and comes with a lower center of gravity so it should provide superb dynamics and handling.
