All-new Volkswagen Passat breaks cover
This is Volkswagen’s brand-new eight-generation Passat (B8) which has the following physical dimensions: 4767mm length, 1832mm width, 1456mm height and with a 2791mm wheelbase. Even though the overall length has decreased by 2mm, the wheelbase is now 79mm longer while the weight has been reduced by up to 85 kg (188 lbs). The vehicle benefits from a MacPherson strut front and a multi-link rear suspension and comes as standard with LED taillights. At an additional cost, LED headlights with Dynamic Light Assist are offered. Compared to its predecessor, the new Passat sits 6mm lower which should improve the vehicle’s dynamics.
The sedan’s trunk capacity has increased by 21 liters to 586 liters while the wagon now offers 650 liters, representing a 47 liter increase. Fold down the rear seats and the Passat Variant offers a whopping cargo capacity of no less than 1,780 liters.
Engine lineup starts with a 1.4 TSI offered with 125 PS and 150 PS, along with a 1.8 TSI rated at 180 PS and a 2.0 TSI generating 220 PS and 280 PS. On the diesel side, there’s a 1.6 TDI with 120 PS and a 2.0 TDI outputting 150 PS, 190 PS and 240 PS. The Passat B8 will also be offered with a hybridized 1.4 TSI developing 211 PS.
Inside the cabin there will be a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a generous package of safety & assistance systems such as a 360-degree Area View function, City Emergency Braking, Traffic Jam Assist, Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert and others.
Starting Thursday, the Volkswagen Passat will be available on order in Germany at a starting price of 25,875 euros for the sedan and 25,950 euros for the estate.
