Volkswagen unleashes Golf race car concept with 330 PS
Volkswagen Motorsport has prepared the Golf race car concept developed primarily to “evaluate a potential customer racing program.” The vehicle adopts a very aggressive and wide body with beefier front and rear bumpers, extended side skirts and a carbon fiber rear wing while a dual exhaust system and a rear diffuser make the hot hatchback look even meaner. It also comes with 18-inch race-spec wheels and benefits from a stripped out cabin to shave off weight while a roll cage, racing seat with head protectors and an Alcantara-covered steering wheel have been added.
Motivation of the Golf race car concept comes from a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 330 PS (243 kW) and a maximum torque of 302 lb-ft (410 Nm). All that power is channeled to the wheels with help from a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) featuring paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.
Volkswagen Motorsport has developed the car in collaboration with SEAT based on their expertise learned after working on the Leon Cup Racer. It remains a concept for now but Liqui Moly Team Engstler is going to field two cars at the 8th round of the Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria.
