Volkswagen XL1 production version revealed
German automaker Volkswagen has released full details and photos with the production version of the XL1. Power comes from a small 0.8-liter, two-cylinder TDI engine developing 47 hp (35 kW) which works together with an electric motor outputting an extra 27 hp (20 kW). The necessary energy is drawn from the battery pack which has a capacity of 5.5 kWh. This setup allows the very economical car to return 261 mpg US (313 mpg UK or 0.9 liters / 100 km), while CO2 emissions stand at 21 g/km. The XL1 has a drag coefficient of 0.189 and weighs only 1752 lbs (795 kg). It’s 3888mm long, 1665mm wide, with a 2224mm wheelbase.
Volkswagen’s latest plug-in hybrid will need 12.7 seconds in order to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) and it will keep on accelerating until it hits an electronically-limited top speed of 99 mph (160 km/h). It benefits from a front double wishbone suspension and a semi-trailing link rear. The XL1 also has carbon fiber reinforced plastic anti-roll bars, ceramic brake discs and a carbon fiber body.
In electric mode it can be driven for up to 31 miles (50 km), while the total range of the car is of 310 miles (499 km) thanks to its tiny fuel tank which has a capacity of just 10 liters.
