Reliability
As we’ve mentioned, the average family car driver is going to be using it a lot. A family car is also usually driven by more than one person. So it needs to be able to sustain itself through all kinds of us. You need to think more along the lines of brands like Honda and Toyota as opposed to GMC or Fiat. Reliability is key to any family car.
Resale value
You also want it to be worth something when it’s finally time to sell your car. Reliability and safety feed into the resale value of any vehicle, of course. The longer a vehicle’s expected to last without being scrapped is what resale value is all about. But you might also want to consider a car that’s easy to maintain and source parts for. After all, you have to do your part at keeping that value up yourself.
Size
You also have to do your part at taking the family around. Size is key for this but it’s also key for getting all their stuff in at the same time. You might not want to go huge and take up the whole road, but you need to make sure you have space for someone’s clarinet. Or half of someone else’s football team. Depending on your family, this need changes, but most family cars are going to have need of quite a bit of space.
A truly great family car is about getting you and all yours safely from to place. Several times. Over a very long period of time. With space in the boot for all your stuff to go with you too.
