Ferrari 488 Spider breaks cover

The Ferrari 488 Spider has made its online premiere and will be presented in mid-September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s obviously an open-top version of the 488 GTB and at the same time it represents the company’s most powerful mid rear-engined V8 model featuring a retractable hard top. Maranello’s latest roadster has vortex generators mounted within the aerodynamically optimized underbody protection while the electric glass rear wind stop has three adjustable positions. Ferrari’s engineers have used no less than 11 different types of aluminum alloys to make the spaceframe chassis which also consists of other noble metals like magnesium.

It takes 14 seconds for the retractable hard top to fold while the torsional rigidity and beam stiffness is the same as on the 488 GTB. Power comes from the same twin-turbo V8 3.9-liter engine pushing out 670 PS at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm at 3,000 rpm which enables the Ferrari 488 Spider to run the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 3 seconds and 124 mph (200 km/h) in 8.7 seconds.

Ferrari mentions sales of their new 488 Spider will begin before the end of this year at a yet undisclosed price tag, but it will obviously be more expensive than the regular 488 GTB.
