Previewed by the X5 eDrive concept, BMW has taken the wraps off the X5 xDrive 40e plug-in hybrid production model. It represents the first plug-in hybrid model of the core BMW brand and it combines a four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo engine with an electric motor, an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and a 9 kWh lithium-ion battery. The model has received 18-inch wheels shod in 255/55 R18 tires while the overall weight stands at 2,230 kg.
In this application, the combustion engine generates 245 HP (180 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque while the electric motor produces an extra 113 HP (83 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). It enables the X5 xDrive 40e provide a combined output of 313 HP (230 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft), enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 6.8 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h).
BMW says the X5 xDrive 40e can run on electric power for 19 miles (31 km) during which it can hit a limited maximum speed of 75 mph (120 km/h). When used as a hybrid, the vehicle will have an average fuel consumption of 3.4 – 3.3 liters / 100 km, with CO2 emissions standing at 78 – 77 g/km. A full recharge of the battery takes 3 hours and 50 minutes from a regular household outlet while with the optional BMW i Wallbox it takes 2 hours and 45 minutes.
