Opel unveils the new Astra Sports Tourer

Opel has taken the wraps off the new Astra Sports Tourer which is now heading to next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. As expected, most of the styling has been carried over from the Astra K hatchback, but with an elongated rear end that has boosted cargo capacity by 80 liters compared to the previous generation, thus bringing the grand total to no less than 1,630 liters with the rear seats folded. Moreover, there’s additional space for the passengers too as front headroom has increased by 26 mm while rear headroom is up by 28 mm.

The 2016 Opel Astra Sports Tourer will feature a 40:20:40 folding rear bench and it will be optionally offered with the FlexOrganizer package that encompasses fasteners, side rails and cargo nets. There’s also a useful electrically-operated trunk opening mechanism available at an additional cost and all you have to do is just wave your foot below the wagon’s rear bumper.

It’s up to 200 kg lighter than the old car and will be sold with a generous array of engines, kicking off with a 3-cylinder 1.0-liter turbo rated at 105 PS, along with a 1.4-liter turbo with 125 PS and 150 PS as well as a beefier 1.6-liter turbo pushing out 200 PS. Those who value economy will go for the 1.6 CDTI which is going to be sold in two states of tune: 95 PS and 136 PS.

The new Astra in both hatchback and wagon body styles represents the first model in this segment to get IntelliLux LED matrix headlights, but keep in mind these will cost extra. Inside the cabin you will find Opel’s latest infotainment system with full support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Opel will start taking orders for the new Astra Sports Tourer next month in Germany and then other countries will follow.
