Cadillac ELR and Chevrolet Volt might get a three-cylinder engine

There is a new report circulating on the Internet which mentions the Chevrolet Volt together with the Cadillac ELR are about to get a three-cylinder range extending engine.

This mill will reportedly be a 1.0-liter or a 1.2-liter unit and could be co-developed with one of the firm’s Chinese partners.

We don’t have any other details about this power unit but it is believed it will be more fuel efficient and lighter in comparison to the 4-cylinder, 1.4-liter engine that both cars have right now.

This move sound logic taking into consideration that General Motors has set up an objective to slash vehicle weight by up 15% in the next three years. While a spokesperson for GM did not disclose any future plans, General Motors did previously mention they plan on manufacturing 3-cylinder engines around 2015, engines which are planned to be used on a global scale.

If this rumor turns out to be true, we should see the three-cylinder engine inside the 2015 Chevrolet Volt and also in the 2016 Cadillac ELR.
