Audi A8 L Security updated to meet VR9 ballistic protection
An updated Audi A8 L Security is going to be introduced next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Compared to its predecessor, the new model has been upgraded from VR7 ballistic protection to VR9 and it’s now being labeled as the “most secure Audi ever.” The certification change was possible after the engineers equipped the armored premium sedan with a new safety cell made out of resistant materials like aramide fabric, special aluminum alloys and a hot-formed steel armor. These not only have increased protection, but have also lowered the vehicle’s weight, although Audi doesn’t say by how much.
Just like before, it will be offered with a bi-turbo TFSI 4.0-liter V8 engine with 435 PS and 600 Nm of torque along with a larger W12 FSI normally-aspirated unit that produces 500 PS and 625 Nm. Output is channeled to a revised quattro AWD system and Audi mentions they had to limit top speed to 130 mph (210 km/h) as a measure to protect the run-flat tires.
As standard, the Audi A8 L Security comes with a selective door unlocking system, an intercom and an armored communication box that sits in the trunk while for more money it can get an emergency fresh air system, emergency exit system and also a fire extinguisher.
It’s already available on order at a starting price of less than €400,000, with the first deliveries set for the spring of 2016.
