It was about a month ago when BMW disclosed preliminary details about the i8 and now they have released the car at Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid is motivated by a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline engine which puts out 231 HP and 236 lb-ft of torque transferred to the rear wheels with help from a six-speed automatic gearbox. There’s also a 131 HP electric motor which gets its energy from the 5 kWh lithium-ion battery. The i8 provides a combined power output of 362 HP and 420 lb-ft which enables the car to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.4 seconds.
The Bavarian marque says the vehicle is capable of returning an impressive 94 mpg US (113 mpg UK or 2.5 liters / 100 km). The driver can use the car on electric power for as much as 22 miles (35 km) and will be able to hit a top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h). When used as a hybrid, the BMW i8 has a combined range in excess of 310 miles (500 km).
