Ford unleashes 2016 GT racecar
Ford has unveiled its brand new 2016 GT racecar set to enter competitions next year. It’s based on the road-going GT supercar and will take part at the legendary Le Mans 24-hour endurance race in 2016 in the LM GTE-Pro class and will take part in the full schedules of the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. Its racing debut will occur in January 2016 at the Rolex 24 in Daytona, Florida with two Ford teams operated by Chip Ganassi Racing and Felix Sabates.
Motivation of the 2016 GT racecar is provided by a 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo engine sourced from the road-going version but adapted for race use. The vehicle is also getting a substantially more aggressive and aerodynamic body with a large front splitter, massive rear diffuser, prominent rear wing and quad side exhaust tips.
Photos of the cabin have not been provided but expect to see a stripped out interior to save weight as much as possible. The 2016 GT racecar also gets motorsport-spec wheels and a special Ford Performance body livery while the lightweight construction makes use of carbon fiber as well as various composites.
It will start racing in 2016 when Ford will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its legendary 1-2-3 triumph at the 1966 Le Mans edition with the original GT.
