Is Fiat working on a turbodiesel V8 engine?
Apparently Fiat is about to make a bold move as according to some rumors they are currently developing a V8 turbodiesel engine. They already make a V6 3.0-liter diesel engine for the recently unveiled Maserati Ghibli, but chances are the Italian marque is preparing a more potent mill. According to Car & Driver, this will be a V8 4.0-liter turbodiesel engine rated at approximately 365 HP (268 kW) and a maximum torque of 460 lb-ft (622 Nm). The V6 3.0-liter diesel inside the Maserati Ghibli outputs 275 HP (202 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm). As a reminder, the Ghibli is Maserati’s first ever diesel-powered model.
Getting back to the rumored V8 turbodiesel, it is believed the new power unit will benefit from Multijet technology as well as direct injection. It should have a fuel consumption of 7.8 liters / 100 km (36 mpg UK or 30 mpg US). If green-lighted for production, the engine will be out around 2016 and should be available on several global Fiat products.
