Jeep has introduced this week in New York the new generation of the Cherokee which is 181 kg (400 lbs) lighter than the old Liberty. It has received independent front and rear suspensions and will be sold with a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Under the hood it can be equipped with a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine pumping out 184 hp (137 kW) and a peak torque of 171 lb-ft (232 Nm). There’s also a more powerful 3.2-liter V6 delivering 267 hp (199 kW) and 233 lb-ft (316 Nm). Active Drive I features a single-power fully-automatic transfer unit and does not require the driver’s intervention. Active Drive II sports a 2-speed power transfer unit, torque management and low range. Active Drive Lock has all the goodies of the previous system but adds a locking rear differential.

As far as safety is concerned, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is equipped with Forward Collision Warning-Plus, ParkSense, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, Lane Departure Warning-Plus and other similar tech. Inside it has a standard 3.5-inch LED grayscale or an optional 7-inch reconfigurable color instrument cluster. The car will be manufactured in the United States at Chrysler’s plant located in Toledo, Ohio.
