German automaker Opel has announced a new entry-level diesel engine for the 2014 Meriva in the form of a 4-cylinder, 1.6-liter CDTI motor. It will serve as a replacement for the outgoing 1.3-liter diesel engine and this new 1.6-liter CDTI generates 90 PS (70 kW) and 206 lb-ft (280 Nm) which makes it 73 lb-ft (100 Nm) more powerful than the old model. Although it delivers more oomph, the motor manages to be more economical as it benefits from a stop/start system and works coupled to a low-friction 6-speed manual gearbox.
As a result of these hardware changes, the 2014 Opel Meriva 1.6 CDTI can return 58.8 mpg US (70.6 mpg UK or 4 liters / 100 km) in the combined cycle with corresponding CO2 emissions of just 105 g/km.
Already on sale at home in Germany, the base diesel Opel Meriva carries a starting price of 19,150 euros (VAT included).
