German car manufacturer Opel has revealed today a new three-cylinder, 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine which will be exhibited next month at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The engine is known as the 1.0-liter SIDI Turbo and benefits from continuously variable valve timing, direct injection and a die-cast aluminum block. This engine has a switchable water pump which can be deactivated during startup in order to boost fuel efficiency and also diminish the time necessary for the engine to warm up. This power unit has also received a twin displacement oil pump and acoustically-optimized covers plus an isolated fuel rail.
According to Opel, the all-new 1.0-liter SIDI Turbo is capable of developing 115 HP (85 kW) and 122 lb-ft (166 Nm) of torque. Compared to the company’s 1.6-liter naturally-aspirated engine, the new turbo mill is 20 percent more economical. It will be available at first on the Adam city car where it will be linked to a newly developed 6-speed manual gearbox which tips the scales at only 81 lbs (37 kg) and should provide better shift quality, according to Opel.
