Alfa Romeo could be working on an E-segment model

According to the latest reports, Italian automaker Alfa Romeo is considering an E-segment model which would have to face some serious competition coming from models such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5-Series. It is said to use underpinnings from Maserati and could be a successor of the 166 model seen in the photo below. Although Fiat’s boss Sergio Marchionne previously said the company’s focus is on launching replacements for the 159, Mito and Giulietta, it seems they are also developing a larger model to compete with the Germans. It will basically be Alfa’s own version of the Maserati Ghibli due next month.

Under the hood it is rumored to feature a twin-turbo V6 3.0-liter engine outputting approximately 385 hp. There will also be a beefier V8 3.8-liter twin-turbo capable of producing somewhere around the region of 480 hp. The same sources are indicating a diesel engine which could represent a 3.0-liter V6 taken from the Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. For more money, clients will have the possibility of opting for an all-wheel drive setup.
