German automaker Mercedes-Benz has big plans for its future lineup as they will enroll on an impressive hybrid / plug-in hybrid expansion in the next several years.
This will be possible thanks to the company’s scalable and modular system which will allow the firm to sell “numerous” new hybrids in the period to come.
They didn’t reveal any in-depth details about this new system but we already know it is compatible with 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, as well as with more powerful V6 gasoline units.
The first model part of this new family will be the S500 Plug-in Hybrid (pictured) which will come out sometime in 2014 and according to Mercedes-Benz is going to “set new standards in the luxury class”. They base this bold statement on the fact that the car will be capable of returning an impressive 58.8 mpg US (70.6 mpg UK or 4 liters / 100 km).
Details about the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid are scarce right now but from what we know so far it will have a 8.7 kWh battery, an electric motor and a 6-cylinder gasoline engine thank should churn somewhere in the region of 333 HP and 354 lb-ft of torque.
