Power comes from a hybrid powertrain which includes a 3.0-liter V6 TSI engine churning 297 hp (220 kW) and a peak torque of 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). This conventional engine works in conjunction with two electric motors, one of them providing 53 hp (40 kW) to the front axle while the other produces 113 bhp) for the rear axle. The concept is capable of providing several driving modes such as eco, sport, off-road, electric vehicle and charge. When the driver choses the last mode, the conventional engine will recharge the car’s lithium-ion battery which has a capacity of 9.9 kWh.

In electric mode the concept can travel for as much as 20.5 miles (33 km) during which it can hit a top speed of 74 mph (120 km/h). In hybrid model, 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) is accomplished in 5.9 seconds, en route to a top speed of 146 mph (236 km/h).

As far as fuel consumption is concerned, the Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept will return 94.1 mpg UK (78.4 mpg US or 3.0 liters / 100 km) when running in electric mode, while when it’s using only the regular engine it does 40.9 mpg UK (34 mpg US or 6.9 liters / 100 km). VW says that when the 80-liter fuel tank is filled, the SUV can be driven for a maximum of 1,190 km (739 miles).
