Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid makes L.A. debut

Volkswagen has presented the production version of its Jetta hybrid which was first seen in January at the Detroit Auto Show in the form of a concept. The vehicle is programmed to go on sale in the United States before the end of the year as a 2013MY and it will cost from $24,995 without the $795 destination charge. The car is powered by a 1.4-liter TSI turbocharged gasoline engine benefiting from direct injection which is capable of pumping out 147 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque, connected to a 27 hp electric motor.

Power is sent to the front wheels with the help of a seven-speed, dual-clutch DSG gearbox.

The car comes with a 1.1 kWh, 60-cell lithium-ion battery that has a curb weight of 78 pounds and has been installed behind the rear seats so there isn’t any loss of space thanks to its compact dimensions. We are dealing with a parallel hybrid that can work exclusively on electric mode automatically for distances of up to 1.3 miles at speeds of up to 37 mph or manually by pressing the E-mode button mounted right next to the gear lever. This can be engaged at speeds of up to 44 mph.

There’s a decoupling clutch installed between the two drives which engages the conventional engine whenever necessary. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the TSI power unit is disengaged when driving at speeds of up to 84 mph, thus allowing the vehicle to run without any sort of fuel consumption.
