Volkswagen unveils Golf R Variant in L.A.

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the Golf R Variant at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, but the model is unlikely to be sold in United States. It’s the first time when the Golf Variant gets a range-topping R version bringing a more aggressive body which includes a glossy black rear diffuser, additional vents and a quad exhaust system with chrome finishers. It has been equipped with bi-xenon headlights incorporating the LED daytime running lights while inside the cabin it has fabric & Alcantara upholstery, blue ambient lighting, large infotainment screen and automatic air conditioning system.

The Volkswagen Golf R Variant is powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged gasoline engine outputting 300 HP (221 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) channeled to a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system through a dual clutch 6-speed gearbox. The hot wagon will run the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in 5.1 seconds before hitting a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) which has been electronically limited.

Not like it matters a lot on such a car, but the Golf R Variant has a very good fuel consumption of only 7 liters / 100 km, with corresponding CO2 emissions of 163 g/km. It should be mentioned the model also comes with an ESC Sport stability control system along with a Driving Profile selector with four modes: Eco, Normal, Individual and Race.

The model will go on sale in Europe in the spring of 2015 while deliveries are programmed to kick off in the summer.
