2013 Volkswagen e-up! production version announced

Back in September 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen introduced the electric version of the up! which at that time was only a concept. Fast forward until this week as VW is presenting the production model which will be showcased this September, also at the Frankfurt auto event, before order books open a few weeks later at a yet undisclosed price tag. At its heart is an electric motor rated with a continuous output of 55 HP (40 kW) and a peak power of 82 HP (60 kW). It has an instant torque of 155 lb-ft (210 Nm) and will reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 14 seconds, en route to a top speed of 84 mph (135 km/h).

Volkswagen has fitted the e-up! with an 18.7 kWh lithium-ion battery which will provide the small electric car with a maximum range of 93.2 miles (150 km). In just half an hour, the battery can be recharged to its 80 percent capacity. The vehicle tips the scales at 2,612 lbs (1,185 kg) and comes with curved LED daytime running lights, as well as aero-optimized frond end, sills and underbody. It rides on bespoke 15-inch machine-polished alloy wheels.
