Volkswagen outs a plug-in hybrid version of the Golf called GTE

Volkswagen is introducing a plug-in hybrid variant of the Golf called GTE which joins the already launched hot GTI and GTD versions, as well as the all-electric e-Golf. Its heart and soul is a four-cylinder TSI 1.4-liter gasoline turbocharged engine outputting 148 bhp. It works together with an electric motor that generates 101 bhp which enables the German to have a combined output of 201 bhp and 349 Nm of torque. When running only on electric power, the Golf GTE will be able to reach a maximum speed of 81 mph while as a plug-in hybrid it can hit 135 mph.

When the vehicle is running in plug-in hybrid mode it will need 7.6 seconds to get to 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill while in electric mode it will cover a distance of up to 31 miles. As a plug-in hybrid, the Volkswagen Golf GTE has a total range of 584 miles and has a fuel consumption of only 1.8 liters / 100 km while emitting 35 g/km of CO2.
