2013 Ford Mondeo gets in-depth detailed

The Blue Oval company has released full details about the upcoming new generation of the Mondeo which will go on sale in fall 2013. One of the engines available for the sedan is going to be a small but potent 1.0-liter EcoBoost with 123 hp. This is a 3-cylinder engine that promises to emit only 130g/km of carbon, which is comparable to a current 2.0-liter TDCi engine. The revised model is 4.8 meters long and has a 2850mm wheelbase, while sitting closer to the ground and packing a new rear multi-link suspension that has adopted an integral link design. Another significant change over the current model would have to be the switch to electric power steering that will improve fuel economy.

The design of the 2013 Mondeo is the work of Chris Hamilton who also designed the model for the United States market. The new model has a considerably bolder appearance and features an Aston Martin-inspired trapezoidal front grille that should appeal to those who like sports cars. Inside the cabin it will come with a better instrument panel which will have several metallic highlights and a generous central infotainment readout.

As far as the engine offerings are concerned, besides the aforementioned 1.0-liter EcoBoost, the 2013 Ford Mondeo will most likely be offered with a 2.0-liter TDCi, an all-new 1.5-liter TDCi, while on the gasoline front we shall find the 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter EcoBoost units, with the latter capable of generating 240 hp. There’s also a larger 2.5-liter engine but this will be available exclusively for the U.S. market.

Gearbox choices will definitely include the dual clutch, 6-speed Powershift and a 6-speed manual transmission which most likely will be the most popular choice among Mondeo buyers. A few months later after the car hits the dealers, Ford plans on introducing its station wagon counterpart that should get the same engine lineup.
