McLaren X-1 one-off seen in Bahrain

At the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix last weekend the one-off McLaren X-1 was spotted nearby. The car was created by MSO – McLaren Special Operations by using the MP4-12C platform. It weighs 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs) and has the same mechanicals as the 12C, including the 616 bhp (460 kW) engine.

The car was commissioned by a wealthy customer who already owned a McLaren MP4-12C, a McLaren F1 and a Mercedes-Benz SLR. He wanted something truly special and after meeting with MSO they figured out what their demanding customer wanted.

His desire was to morph design ideas from cars such as the 1971 Citroen SM, 1959 Buick Electra, 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K, 1961 Facel Vega and a 1953 Chrysler D’Elegance. Aside from drawing their inspiration from these cars, McLaren Special Operations also used an eggplant, Thomas Mann Montblanc pen, Airstream trailer, grand piano and a Jaeger-LeCoultre clock when finalizing the styling of the X-1.
